Active Starlight binoculars use integral electronics to enhance the available light to provide a clearer image. The disadvantage is that they depend on a power source rather than just optics. Whenever you are going into the great outdoors, make sure you have batteries.
Active infra red equipment works in the same manner as a normal active device except that they take advantage of light that the human eye is unable to process and create a useful image out of it. This type of light is given off by most living things and these devices give you the chance to spot them when there is no normal light at all.
Image Intensifiers are at the top of the range and utilize every possible light source, from the visible spectrum and the infra red, to deliver a good quality image. This type of technology is usually only used by the military.
